Apple and Google Both Rumored to Work on Music Subscription ...

Quick! Name the next big frontier for tech giants Apple and Google! If you said music subscription services like Spotify, Rdio, and Pandora, you?d be right.

Both companies are rumored to have plans for a music subscription business. Google would launch a service through its YouTube division and Apple executive officers have been in talks to partner with Beats Audio?s recently announced project Daisy service.

According to Reuters, Apple?s executive leader Tim Cook met with Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine during a trip to Los Angeles last month. During the meeting, which was also attended by Apple?s Internet product boss Eddy Cue, Cook shared interest in Beat?s ?project Daisy plans, but did not discuss firm plans for a partnership.?

Meanwhile CNN reported yesterday that Google?s rumored music solution could be released as a new feature within YouTube. The popular destination for user-submitted video already enjoys high visits for music videos and audio tracks. Convincing its users to embrace an official music subscription service might not be a hard sell.

For now, the rumors with firmer ground seem to be Apple?s partnership with Beats. The Verge reported yesterday that Beats received a $60 million investment from billionaire mogul Len Blavatnik, who also purchased Warner Music Group in 2011. Such a partnership would give Beats a substantial catalogue to launch a new streaming service. The company also acquired music subscription service MOG last year. Adding Apple as a partner could potentially distribute Daisy to hundreds of millions of iTunes users.

Obama to meet with Republican senators over budget

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to meet with several Republican senators for dinner on Wednesday as part of his effort to revive talks to tackle the nation's long-term deficit, the White House said.

The Democratic president is trying to cobble together what he calls a "common sense caucus" among lawmakers to help resolve U.S. budget woes and push his legislative agenda.

He also is scheduled to travel to Capitol Hill next week, when he will address Senate Republicans at a lunch on March 14.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said the lunch will be an opportunity to discuss budget and economic issues.

A source, who asked not to be identified, said Obama also plans to meet with House of Representatives Democrats next week, although the date has not yet been set.

Wednesday's dinner meeting, to be held at a hotel near the White House, could be postponed, the White House said, as Washington faced heavy snow forecasts that already had closed most federal agencies.

In recent days, Obama has searched for common ground with senators who in the past have indicated a willingness to compromise on budget issues. The White House on Sunday suggested talks could center around a broad budget deal that includes new tax revenues as well as reforms to entitlement programs. These include the Medicare health care program for the elderly and disabled and Social Security retirement benefits - programs that are rapidly growing in cost as the population ages.

The Republican U.S. senators Obama has contacted recently include Bob Corker of Tennessee, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Rob Portman of Ohio and Susan Collins of Maine, according to the senators or congressional aides. The White House declined to confirm the names.

Coburn will attend Wednesday's dinner, as will Senator John Hoeven of North Dakota, their aides said. Senator John McCain of Arizona, who ran unsuccessfully for president against Obama in 2008, also will attend, according to an aide. The New York Times said about 12 senators would attend.

At the heart of the U.S. fiscal crisis is disagreement over how to rein in the $16.7 trillion debt. Obama wants to narrow the fiscal gap with spending cuts and tax hikes. Republicans do not want to concede again on taxes after doing so in negotiations over the "fiscal cliff" at the New Year.

Last Friday marked the start of $85 billion in across-the-board budget cuts that are to be carried out by September 30. It was not clear whether Obama, in his new contacts with Republican senators, was still trying to negotiate a substitute for those cuts.

Republican leaders rejected higher taxes as part of a budget deal that would have avoided the cuts contained in the so-called sequester that kicked in Friday.

Lawmakers are working short-term to avoid a government shutdown when the current U.S. federal budget expires at the end of March. Bills moving through the House and Senate will incorporate the $85 billion in lower spending.

Facebook hit with fresh IPO-related lawsuit

A Facebook shareholder filed a lawsuit over the largest social networking company's botched initial public offering and is seeking to hold Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, directors and officers responsible for the damage.

The lawsuit by Gaye Jones alleges that the company's directors knew that Facebook did not disclose weaker revenue trends as more users accessed the website through mobile devices. The complaint alleges that information had been selectively shared with the company's IPO underwriters and key investors.

The lawsuit seeks to force the directors and other defendants to disgorge the money they made from selling stock through the IPO, which they allegedly knew was overpriced.

"The defendants were unjustly enriched because they realized enormous profits and financial benefits from the IPO, despite knowing that reduced revenue and earnings forecasts for the company had not been publicly disclosed to investors," said the complaint.

Shares in Facebook's highly anticipated IPO fell from the initial price of $38 to about $25 within a month. The stock closed on Monday at $27.72 on Nasdaq, down 6 cents.

Soon after the May IPO, which was also marked by technical glitches on the Nasdaq exchange, more than 50 investor lawsuits were filed. A proposed class action is being heard in federal court in Manhattan.

Jones' lawsuit is a derivative case, meaning the investor seeks to step into the shoes of the company and any money recovered from Zuckerberg and others would be paid to Facebook, not shareholders.

Four previous derivative cases were dismissed last month, in part because U.S. District Court Judge Robert Sweet in Manhattan found the shareholders did own the stock when the alleged misconduct took place prior to the IPO.

Sweet said in dismissing the previous lawsuits that Facebook had "repeatedly made express and extensive" warnings about the increased use of mobile applications.

Unlike the previous derivative plaintiffs, Jones has owned Facebook stock since February 2012.

The lawsuit was filed in the Court of Chancery in Delaware, where Facebook is incorporated, and also named as defendants the IPO underwriters -- units of JPMorgan Chase & Co, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs Group.

JPMorgan, Goldman and Morgan Stanley declined to comment. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The case is Gaye Jones v Mark Zuckerberg et al, Delaware Court of Chancery, No. 8375.

ClockworkMod Superuser app now available in the Google Play Store

We first took a look at Koush's ClockworkMod Superuser app about a week ago, and we were impressed with what we saw. A well designed utility app for rooted users, that brought a great feature set along with being free and open-sourced. At the time, the only way to try it out was to flash it manually, either via ROM Manager or via recovery. 

That all changes today as Superuser has been pushed to the Google Play Store to download and install to your device. Also since the beta builds, some 'embarrassing spelling mistakes' have been rectified, as well as a few other fixes. It will remove any current Superuser apps on your device, and if you're having issues installing via the Play Store, links are provided in the description to a direct download to flash manually.
